Massachusetts cannabis sales surpass $9 billion milestone

The Cannabis Control Commission announced that adult-use marijuana establishments have surpassed $9 billion in gross sales in Massachusetts.

Sales data published to the Commission’s Open Data Platform found that marijuana retailers in the state crossed the $9 billion sales mark on February 4. These establishments include retail stores, delivery operators, and microbusinesses with delivery endorsements. The last billion-dollar milestone was passed in June 2025.

“Every billion-dollar cannabis sales milestone is a reminder that this new sector supports thousands of jobs and transitions thousands of customers from the unregulated market,” Chair Shannon O’Brien said. “Each purchase is an investment in a legal, local business offering safely tested products to adult consumers to help fund any number of state operations and services.”

Marijuana establishments have grossed $151 million so far in 2026. A significant increase in sales was noted before the largest snowstorm in the region on January 25 and 26, grossing $7.1 million and $6.9 million, respectively. The surge in retail visits and deliveries ahead of the storm exceeded sales on the “cannabis holiday,” 4/20, in 2025, which grossed $4.8 million.

“Sales milestones like this one demonstrate the significant impact of a highly regulated industry that is still less than a decade old,” Executive Director Travis Ahern said. “The entire Commonwealth stands to benefit because cannabis tax revenue supports vital programs and services, from the MBTA to the Cannabis Social Equity Trust Fund and substance abuse treatment programs.”

The first two marijuana retailers in Massachusetts began operating in November 2018. Additionally, medical marijuana treatment centers have generated $1.57 billion in gross patient sales since 2019 after the Cannabis Control Commission assumed oversight of the Medical Use of Marijuana Program from the Department of Public Health.

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue stated that cannabis sales and excise taxes generated approximately $280 million in fiscal year 2025. Regulated cannabis products sold in adult-use stores are subject to a 6.25% state sales tax and a 10.75% state excise tax. Medical marijuana sales to patients are not taxed in Massachusetts.
